The Cause Of Eyebags & How To Get Rid Of Them

Everyone has experienced having eyebags at some point in their lives, and while it can be not cosmetically pleasing at times, it doesn’t indicate anything serious medically.

In fact, eyebags are a result of temporary conditions stemming from biological, environmental, and lifestyle causes, such as:

  • Aging
  • Genetics
  • Having a poor diet (a diet that has a lot of salty foods which increases fluid retention)
  • Allergies
  • Not sleeping enough
  • Experiencing too much stress

Treatments

As eyebags are usually a cosmetic concern, treatments can be done at home to reduce them. More often than not however, such treatments are only effective in the short term. Medical treatment may be required to effectively improve them.

Home Treatments

  • Using a cool compress

A simple and easy method is to place a cool and damp washcloth around your eyes for a few minutes to reduce the swelling.

  • Reducing fluid intake before bedtime and salt intake

To avoid puffy eyebags, it is advisable to drink less water before bedtime and cut down on any salty foods in your diet to reduce fluid retention under the eyes.

  • Always get enough sleep

Make it a habit to get at least 7 – 8 hours of quality rest every day, allowing enough time for the body to heal and return your energy for the day after.

  • Avoid potential allergens

Allergens can irritate the eyes, causing the skin underneath the eyes to swell. This can be remedied by taking over-the-counter allergy medications such as antihistamines.

  • Use sunscreen frequently

Over time, continued exposure to the sun can cause the skin underneath the eyes to droop, causing eyebags. To mitigate this, practice wearing sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 30 before heading out.

  • Remove makeup before going to bed

Generally, it’s good practice to take your makeup off before going to sleep as it may irritate the skin or develop an infection that can potentially create redness and/or puffiness around the eyes.

  • Quit smoking

Apart from the usual dangers of smoking, the activity also reduces your store of Vitamin C which helps the body create collagen for your skin. Smoking depletes this, and can potentially accelerate the permanence of eyebags.

Medical treatments

If you want to permanently rid yourself of eyebags, there are a few non-invasive treatments.

  • Fillers

Hyaluronic acid filler is injected in the area between the under-eye and cheek to create a smooth transition. Results are expected to last anywhere between 6 months to 1 year.

  • Laser therapy

A laser is used to remove the top layers of wrinkly skin, stimulating new skin to rise. Depending on the skin type and exposure to the sun, this method can last for up to a few years.

  • HIFU

This treatment uses high intensity focused ultrasound to stimulate collagen and skin tightening effect, resulting in shrinking of the eye bags.

  • Radiofrequency treatment

Radiofrequency (RF) energy treatment around the eyes is useful in reducing fine lines and eye bags. RF energy stimulates collagen and produces skin tightening and eye bag reduction effects.

  • Surgery

In severe cases, you may need to see a surgeon for surgical correction of eye bags.
